The Complete Rainwaters in the 1850 Census
Unless otherwise noted, these census records were transcribed from the microfilmed originals, M432 series, and from the scans of the microfilmed originals available online. The index sources for this transcription are the printed all-name index volumes available at the Dallas Public Library, and the online indexes available from FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com.
Reading these records
The first line of each record gives the following information: District, county, state, page number,
line number, dwelling number, family number. I always use the stamped page numbers found in the
upper right hand corner of the original census pages. These are stamped on every other page, so
the pages without numbers have the number from the preceeding page plus the letter B.
The second and successive lines give the following information: Name, age, sex and race,
occupation, value of real estate owned if stated, birthplace, miscellaneous information.
