William J. Ivy and Edith Rainwater

William Ivy and Edith Rainwater, 1925

Edith Rainwater Ivy was the daughter of George Mitchell Rainwater and and his first wife, Sarah Jane Weddle. She was born in Casey County on July 12, 1906, the second of four siblings and six half siblings.

She and William Ivy eloped to Jeffersonville, Indiana on September 17, 1925. Together, they had six children: Sarah Edith, born 1926; Robert Franklin, born 1932; Willis Parks, born 1935; Alpha May, born 1929; William Joseph Jr., born 1930; and James G., born 1938. James was stillborn, William lived until age two and Alpha May died at age 9. William made his living as a farmer and as the proprietor of a grocery store in Lexington.

William J. Ivy died on January 23, 1967. Edith Rainwater Ivy survived him by many years, and departed life in June 19, 2000. She is buried with her husband in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
